STICKY FINGERS

Julia had never really looked at the machete hanging on the wall over Donnie’s bed. It had always been up there, but now she scrutinized it. Was it real? Donnie had bragged about using it to intimidate his workers occasionally, but she’d never given it a second thought before.

She’d never needed a weapon before.

The overhead light gleamed off the blade. It had to be real—Donnie wasn’t one to possess cheap imitations—although she had never seen it up close. The blade’s edge was worn yet sharp.

Good enough to slice through Donnie’s throat.

She grinned, but turned her head away from him. Better that he didn’t see the sudden expression of joy. This was the answer she’d been waiting for, and it had been right there in plain sight all along. Her heart beat faster as her mind filled with dark fantasies and her naked body tensed beside him, with her chest and head draped over his legs.

Donnie shifted, then crawled out of bed and headed for the bathroom.

Julia pretended to sleep, but after the bathroom door closed she carefully stood on the bed and removed the machete from the wall. Donnie wouldn’t miss it—not in the haze of a morning hangover anyway. She doubted he would even look up from his phone long enough to notice her, much less his prized weapon. There were some guns in the house too, but he always kept those locked up. A machete would do just fine.

A big shipment would arrive within the hour. Donnie had said nothing about it to her—he rarely said anything, and she never asked—but they had been together long enough to pick up the patterns of his business, and something goooood was on its way. The incoming stash would generate more money than she could earn in several years, and he’d made it quite clear she had to leave the house for the rest of the day. With so much money exchanging hands, he wanted Julia to be safe. But that was a lie, of course. The truth was, he didn’t trust her.

Smart man. I’m not one to be trusted.

The previous night, he had transferred the cash he planned to use for the big deal to a smaller safe upstairs. But in his drug-induced stupor, he’d made an egregious mistake by leaving several stacks of hundred-dollar bills on the dresser after counting it out on the bed, and had forgotten about some of it. Well… not so much forgotten about it as she had hidden it from him after intentionally throwing a pink lace nightgown over it, then sliding it into the top drawer after he stepped away. More like he had stopped noticing it. A wide grin crept over her face. It was more than enough cash to buy her way back home to the sunny beaches of Brazil.

Shouldn’t have left in the first place. But the lure of easy money and a ruggedly handsome man’s promises had captured her sense of adventure, if not her heart.

But money wasn’t the biggest obstacle to her escape.
